Eighth & final collaboration with Daniel Levin Becker, “Obscurity.”
Don’t want to bore you with my customary self-felchetation too much, but I must note that my lame cartoons do Italo Calvino no justice and I strongly encourage everyone to read his books instead, they’re truly great. If On A Winters Night A Traveler and Cosmicomics are my favorites so far. The 6 memos are worth reading too, I’m particularly drawn to the duality he stresses in each of them.
Matt Madden kindly mentioned “a cyclical sense of hope and futility” of these comics, and I did try to highlight the written constraints with a number of visual ones. Some of them are obvious, others are probably only apparent to me alone, but that’s probably for the best. Although I’m not at all happy with the quality of this work, it was a good exercise & it made me rethink the relationship between pictures & words in a new light.
